4 Stages in the life of a Bootstrapping & Moonlighting Startup

If you are one of those unfortunate souls, bitten by the startup bug, but still going through the daily grind of a full-time job (i.e. a Moonlighter), like me. And you have no blessings from an Angel Investor like a wealthy uncle or a windfall lottery or inheritance, things might look a bit too bleak (i.e. Bootstrapping). Worry not, you may already be fast approaching the first or even the second stage of a life away from the misery of four decades of employment slavery.

Stage 1: earnings = difference in salary increment of a 'top-most' and 'average' appraisal.

Lets assume that you spent a lot of years and money on education finally getting a Master's degree in Management or Technology from the so called 'reputed' colleges in India. That will earn you an average salary of say a Lakh rupees per month in India. Typically there is a difference of 5-8% in the increment of the average and top graded employees, which equates to 5000-8000 Rs. per month. If you work hard at your startup for a year and just average at your job for a year, you may easily be able to generate earnings of more than 5000 Rs. a month and that means you have already climbed your first step towards success salvation!

Stage 2: earnings = increment

In India you can expect 12-18% increment in your job every year. This equates to 12,000 to 18,000 Rs. per month. If your startup reaches this stage in two years, you have already elevated yourself to saintly levels of perspective about the trivial business of grades and appraisals. It means you are no longer at the mercy of your employer to pass judgement about your performance, you are perfectly capable of giving an increment to yourself. It means you have already quit half the rat-race.

Stage 3: earnings = salary

This is the holy grail of all over-educated wannabe entrepreneurs. Don't fret even if it takes 3-5 years to get to this stage. Even if it takes 10 years, it will still save you from 3 more decades of slavery. This is the time when you can call it quits and stop wasting 9 precious hours of your day in a black hole rivalling nothingness of 'the office'.

Stage 4: earnings = 2 x salary

In all probability you will have already quit your job. If not it is time to get the hell out if that place. It means you are way more efficient and valuable in the real world than the make-believe world inside your organisation and working there is nothing but a monumental waste of your time. This is also the point where even the fastest promotions and a dream run of appraisals is never going to earn you more money than your startup. This is also the time when you will have proved all the naysayers wrong about your potential and you are free to cherish every moment of rubbing it in their faces!

I wish you All the Best! Cheers!
